Rogue hotkeys by spec: Combat, Assassination, Subtlety
How it works
- One plan covers all three specs. Every key holds a priority list in
addons/RogueLayout/Layout.lua. The first spell you know fills the slot, so your talents decide what the key does. - Spec swaps should refill the bars. Dual Spec arrives at level 40 (Blizzard deep dive). RogueLayout refills on SPELLS_CHANGED, which a spec swap should fire; not checked in game. A talent slot your new spec can't fill keeps its old, unusable icon.

Teal keys are the spec's talents; grey text is a bound key that's empty in that spec.rogue-wiring.png: each key, its binding command, the action slot, what each spec gets there, and the Stealth page.
What changes by spec
| Key | Combat | Assassination | Subtlety |
|---|---|---|---|
| A (Stealth: Cheap Shot) | Sinister Strike | Mutilate at 40 (Sinister Strike before that) | Hemorrhage |
| T in Stealth | (empty) | (empty) | Premeditation |
| Shift-S | (empty) | (empty) | Ghostly Strike |
| Shift-B | Riposte (20) | (empty) | (empty) |
| Shift-T | Blade Flurry (30) | Cold Blood (25) | Preparation |
| Alt-T | Adrenaline Rush (40) | (empty) | Death Mark (40) |
All other keys do the same thing in every spec:
| Layer | Keys |
|---|---|
| No modifier | S Backstab, F Eviscerate, G Vanish, Q Kick, T Shank, Z Stealth, X Gouge, V Rupture, C Feint, 2 Throw/Shoot |
| In Stealth | S Ambush, F Garrote, G Sap Mouseover (macro), Q Pick Pocket, Z Stealth, X Distract |
| Shift | F Kidney Shot, G Expose Armor, X Blind, Q Focus Kick (macro) |
| Ctrl | V Disarm Trap, G Pick Lock, X Distract |
| Alt | A Evasion, F Slice and Dice, S Sprint, Q Will of the Forsaken, 1-5 poison macros (MH Instant, OH Instant, OH Crippling, OH Deadly, OH Mind-numbing) |
| Movement | E forward, D back, W/R strafe, Mouse 4 autorun, Shift-C character. Mouse 3, Mouse 5, Shift-Mouse 4, Shift-W, Shift-R and Ctrl-T are kept free. |
Problems found
- Shift-V is empty in every spec. It plans Venom, which the Nov 2 notes made a passive (Shank buffs your poisons). RogueLayout places only active spells.
- Key 1 and Stealth key 1 are empty in every spec. They plan Redirect. I found no Forever source for Redirect: none in the Blizzard notes, the guides or the ForeverAuras rank data. It is a Cataclysm ability.
- Free keys by spec. Combat leaves Shift-S and Stealth T empty. Assassination leaves Shift-S, Shift-B, Alt-T and Stealth T empty. Subtlety leaves Shift-B empty.
- Alt-T is wired to the Ctrl bar. It is bound to Action Bar 3 button 1 (slot 49), the only key whose modifier differs from its bar. It works, but that button sits on the bottom-right bar.
Sources
research/rogue/leveling.md: talent paths and levels for Combat (Riposte 20, Blade Flurry 30, Adrenaline Rush 40) and Assassination (Cold Blood 25, Mutilate 40). They come from the Nov 2 Blizzard notes plus third-party builds.- Blizzard "Beta Development Notes - Updated November 2", captured 2026-11-04 (
data/scrapes/_shared/):- Venom is passive.
- Subtlety: Premeditation row 3, Ghostly Strike row 4, Hemorrhage changed, and Death Mark is new: active, row 7, a finisher.
- ForeverAuras 1.2.2
SecretAuraRanks.lua(read 2026-11-05) lists Rogue Cold Blood, Ghostly Strike, Hemorrhage, Mutilate, Premeditation, Preparation and Venom. It has no Redirect.
Unverified
- Subtlety levels. Hemorrhage and Preparation have no level source. "Row 3" and "row 4" assume 5 points per row.
- Preparation is sourced only from third-party guides and the beta rank data; the Nov 2 notes don't mention it.
- The pictures assume the spec's full talent set at 60. While leveling, a talent key stays empty until you learn it.
